ITIL Overview
IT is critical to the successful modern enterprise: automation for speed and quality through repeatable process, worldwide communication and collaboration, and flexibility for management. The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a set of global best practices for the planning, delivery, and management of IT. ITIL’s two key elements for implementation are the multiple processes and functions that define an IT lifecycle and the decomposition of the enterprise into services. A service is a means of delivering value to customers by facilitating outcomes customers want to achieve without the ownership of specific costs and risks. ITIL’s Service Lifecycle is a comprehensive approach to manage the services for sustainable performance through structural definition, interrelationships between components, and the holistic evaluation of changes on components and the entire system.
The value of technology is secondary to process. If a process is deficient, then technology will provide lower quality quicker through automation. ITIL’s processes are based on global IT experience and best practices that have matured over the past 30 years. ITIL is available for enterprise certification by ISO 20000 and individual certification levels. ITIL complements other management methodologies: Lean Six Sigma, ISO 9001:2000, CMMI, and CoBIT. ITIL has become the de facto standard in IT Service Managemen for organizations requiring high performance IT services.
